South Lyon Cycle Racing Team Update

Spring Traing Series (STS) Weekend #1!!!

The team hit out at the annual SE Michigan Spring Training Series (STS) in force this past weekend, with great representation. 10+ team members were present on both Saturday and Sunday, making the South Lyon Cycle Racing Team one of the best represented teams at each race.

On Saturday racing got underway in at the Waterford Hills Sports Car Track with the Flying Rhino Cycling Club Spring Fling Race #1. Temps were in the low 40F’s, but that didn’t discourage a large (for a MI spring race) field of 47 showing up for the “A” Race. The event would consist of 16 laps of the 1.5 mile circuit of the track. The race started quickly as they always do. After about 3 laps of multiple attacks and counter-attacks, team member Vince Roberge put in a great move to leap off the front, quickly being joined by Brian Adams of the Lathrup Industries team. Individually, riders would bridge to the lead group, until 2006 Ore-To-Shore and ICEMAN champion, Mike Simonson towed about 4 guys to the break and it numbered about 10. In a great move team member Joey Schaard also bridged to the break, joining Vince and giving the South Lyon team 2 guys in the break.

Eventually the break pulled away enough that there was no chance they'd be brought back. After a couple of laps the lead break split into two groups and unfortunately Vince and Joey missed the move. Brian Adams made the split and ended up taking 2nd in the sprint to Danny Klein of the Wolverines Sports Club. Vince placed 11th with Joey in 12th.

For Sunday the STS venue moved to Ann Arbor for the Quick Release Spring Series Race #1. This event is held on a 1 kilometer course in an office park. The series is in it’s 23rd year and always brings out a large number of racers. Luckily for the “A” racers the weather cleared up from the earlier rain showers and everyone was blessed with sunny skies and temps in the upper 50F’s.

The field for the A Race was an incredible 59 riders. With such a large pack, the racing was fast from the start. One special guest racer today was 9 time Tour De France participant, Frankie Andreu, who was out to get some early season fitness. Again it was team member Vince Roberge who was the early protagonist as he rolled off the front with former Jittery Joe’s professional racer Max Finkbeiner. They were quickly joined by Max’s teammate, Blair Dudley and with a stiff headwind blowing down the finishing straight, these three quickly built up an 15 second lead. Having missed out on the move, many other teams immediately went to the front to close down the breakaway. Recognizing Vince’s excellent form, the team wagered that even against teammates, he’d be a safe bet for the win and took to the job of breaking up the other teams counter-attacks. Working in the pack the other South Lyon Cycle Racing Team members did an excellent job to protect Vince’s breakaway and the threesome stayed away till the finish. Vince placed an excellent 2nd to uber-sprinter Blair Dudley, with Joey Schaard again being the teams other highest placed finisher in 10th.

Additionally, while most of the team was racing in SE Michigan, team member Adam Sczech traveled down to Greenville, OH to race at the Colavita Central Ohio TT Series Race #1. Adam put in a great time to take first for the Men 20-29 age group, the teams first victory in 2007!!! Way to go Adam!!!
