Bring it ON!!!
February is here and the team is RAMPING up. Guys are on the move and there's big things afoot.
The roads around the little hamlet of California, Kentucky (about 15 miles south of Cincinnati) will be heating up for the Schabobele Road Race. This race is the traditional season opener for the Sunrise Sports Cycling Team. The course is a BEAUTIFUL mix of short, steep hills, narrow farm roads and rolling wooded lanes. Traffic is non-existent and you'd almost think you were racing in Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
THIS RACE IS A MUST DO!!!
On the move are Derek Timmerman and Vince Roberge who are up to BIG things.
First up is Derek Timmerman, who is spending the first 1/2 of February in the sunny locale of Tuscon, ARIZONA! He comes back to Michigan on the 16th, just in time to pack his car and meet up with the team down at the Schabobele Road Race. Derek has said he's going to race the Godzulla two day, which includes the Schabobele Road Race and the Mentor Road Race the next day, Sunday, February 19th. He might change his mind after pocketing the MILLION Turkish Lira he'll get for winning Schabobele!
Also racking up some frequent flyer miles is Vince Roberge who leaves for Phoenix on February 15th to meet up the the "GOON" squad from the Cycling Center. These guys will be down there to get in some early season racing at the Valley of the Sun stage race in Phoenix and to beat up on some of the locals. After the race, they trek up into the mountains around Alberqerque, New Mexico for some high altitude training for two weeks before taking the show back to Belgium to unload more punishment on the Euros.
Lastly at the end of the month, team coach and AAVC Junior Development VP, Mark Lovejoy and family (including step-son Brendan Pauley) are heading to sunny Italy for a 3 week tour! Of course, being a bike racer and being in Italy, a tour of the Campagnolo factory is on their itinerary, as well as a ride up the climb of the Ghisallo (featured in the one-day classic, the Giro de Lombardi) to the small Madonna de Ghisallo chapel at the top (on this website SCROLL DOWN! WOW!). Hopefully they will have pictures and stories when they return.
Thats the news for now. I'll see you ON THE ROAD!!!
