Sunrise Sports Cycling Team Race Reports

Weekend Racing Report - August 21, 2005

Prestige Cycling Lapeer Days Criterium, Lapeer, Michigan

On Sunday the team was racing again at the Lapeer Days Criterium in downtown Lapeer. This course is ALWAYS a favorite of racers, with 6 corners, a quick uphill section and a long, fast, finishing straight.

In the Men’s Pro1/2 category race Houston Peterson, Ric Lung, Andy Weir, Ian Lockley and Jeff Hamilton took the line. In the first significant breakaway, both Ric and Houston joined five other riders to gain a 20 second gap on the field. As the pressure on these seven mounted late in the race, the breakaway started to disintegrate and Ric and Houston were re-absorbed by the field. One rider was able to drop the remnants of the break and took off solo, catching the field. Several other riders were able to escape in the closing moments and the first 8 places were up the road. Jeff Hamilton was able to give the team a result by taking the field sprint for 9th place.

In the Men’s Category 3 race the team had a full contingent, with John Rigdon, Mark Caswell, Jason Rafeld, Alex Keomany, John Zaccone, Jordan Stohl and Derek Timmerman all present. From the gun attacks started. By mid-race a group of 4 escaped, with Alex and Derek leading. These 4 worked together well and at the finish Derek lead Alex out for a great sprint with Alex taking the win by 5 bike lengths! Sunrise Sports had 5 riders in the top 11 places.
