Weekend Racing Report - June 18, 2005
Sunrise Sports Allen Park Criterium - Allen Park, Michigan
Sunrise Sports Allen Park Criterium, Saturday, June 18, 2005
Event number 6 of the season long Michigan Challenge Road Racing Series (www.mbra.org) was the Sunrise Sports Allen Park Criterium located in Allen Park, Michigan.
Held on a 1km circuit through an office park, the Sunrise Sports Allen Park Criterium is your straightforward, bread and butter, office park criterium. The staple of American road racing! The type of race EVERYONE who has raced a bike in the US knows like the back of their hand.
With the first race starting at 830am with the Men’s Category 5 field, until 300pm with the start of the Men’s Pro/1/2 Category field, a whole day of racing action was on deck.
In each category the racing was fast! The forgiving turns and long, open straight sections made it difficult for riders to break-away from the pack, but that didn’t stop many from trying. Throw in the boat load of merchandise primes which were provided by our sponsors, especially Sunrise Sports (www.sunrisesports.com), Jittery Joe’s Coffee Roasting Company (www.thebeanteam.com), Midwest Cycling Group (www.midwestcyclinggroup.com), and Ritchey Bicycle Components (www.ritcheylogic.com), racers were attacking LEFT, RIGHT and CENTER throughout each race!
Houston Peterson of the Sunrise Sports Cycling Team leads the Pro1/2 field down the finishing straight
In the end total riders competing numbered 300+. As an added bonus, the race was graced with the participation of US bicycle racing legend and 9 time finisher of the Tour de France, Frankie Andreu, who lives in nearby Dearborn, MI. Frankie came to the race with his whole family. In the kids race, Frankie’s three children all participated, with the youngest being the first finisher in the kids “tricycle” category!
Former US Postal Service Team pro cyclist Frankie Andreu leads Wholefoods/WSC teammate Ryan Cross and the Pro1/2 field through turn #1
The Sunrise Sports Mini-Cooper was the pace vehicle for the first lap of each race
The popular kids races had 4 categorys, TRICYCLES, TRAINING WHEELS, 100 YARDS and 1 KILOMETER!
The Red Bull Mobile Energy Crew "ENERGIZED" the racers and spectators!
